Forest Service to host virtual career fairs | New

The U.S. Forest Service will host two virtual career fairs to recruit wildland firefighters for the Mendocino National Forest on-call wildfire program.

“The Mendocino National Forest sponsors 10 OC teams for fire suppression, forestry personnel, fuel projects and other tasks,” said a statement released by the forest service. “Each crew consists of 15 duty officers and three to five agency officers.”

Virtual career fairs will be held on Tuesday, November 30 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and Wednesday, December 15 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The two virtual career fairs will be identical in format and will cover the OC program, training opportunities and hiring process, the statement said.

“Becoming a wildland firefighter is a great career opportunity for anyone who enjoys being outdoors, hiking, traveling and learning leadership skills,” said Shilo Springstead, fire training officer.

The Forest Service will also organize recruiting events in January 2022 and provide basic fire training in February and March. According to the statement, crews will be paid during training, and once training is complete, crews must pass an arduous pack test before being registered for the upcoming fire year 2022.
