The Boyle County Public Library offers many free activities, special events, and community services throughout the year. Interactive activities often include story hours, author tours, craft events and book clubs. This month, the library has scaled back most of its regular youth events to prepare for an activity-packed summer reading program for all ages, which begins June 1. Here are some of the upcoming events at the library:
Third Thursday Book Club
In May, the book club will read The Peach Keeper by Sarah Addison Allen. Join the Book Discussion on Thursday, May 19 at 10:30 a.m. in the Community Room. (18 and over)
magic the gathering
On Thursday, May 19 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., the library will host Magic the Gathering, a fun and fast-paced strategy card game from Wizards of the Coast. This event will take place in the library conference room. (13 years and over)
Thursdays from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., join us to knit and crochet items for those in need. This knitting and crocheting group welcomes current and new members to weekly craft meetings at the library. Some materials provided. Beginners are welcome. This event will take place in the Reading Room. (13 years and over)
Jeanne Penn Lane “Celebrating Kentucky Writers”
On Saturday, May 21 from 12:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., the library will host the 25th Annual Jeanne Penn Lane “Celebration of Kentucky Writers.” The event will feature an outstanding roster of Kentucky-based writers, many of whom are award-winning and/or best-selling authors. Among the many presenters will be Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Maurice Manning, who will read from his work and sing. Many writers will have their books available for purchase.
Chad Horn will open and close the program. Readers include Ruth Rogers, Doris Settles, Darlene Campbell, Chris Helvey, Virgil Hayes, Ginny Smith, Maurice Manning, Rick Lee, Paul Stansbury and Jenean McBrearty. The full schedule can be found in the list of events on the library’s website. This free event will take place in the community room of the library. All are invited to attend.
In addition to the Saturday event, there will also be a program beginning at noon on Sunday, May 22 at the Historic Penn’s Store in Gravel Switch, Kentucky, featuring music and readings. This event is also free and open to the public.
Dungeons & Dragons is often called the greatest role-playing game of all time. The library offers an adult D&D club that meets at the library on the second and fourth Sundays of the month. Adults can join a session on Sunday, May 22 at noon or 4:30 p.m. No experience is necessary, but registration is required. To register, sign up at the library or email [email protected] (18 and over)
