VirtualBox is a powerful x86 and AMD64/Intel64 virtualization product for businesses and individuals. Targeting servers, workstations and embedded applications, it is now the only enterprise-grade virtualization solution that is also open source software.

Some of the features of VirtualBox are:

  • Modularity. VirtualBox has an extremely modular design with well-defined internal programming interfaces and a client/server design. This makes it easier to control from multiple interfaces at once: for example, you can start a virtual machine in a typical virtual machine GUI, then control that machine from the command line, or possibly remotely. VirtualBox also comes with a full SDK: even though it’s Open Source software, you don’t need to hack the source to write a new interface for VirtualBox.
  • Descriptions of virtual machines in XML. Virtual machine configuration settings are stored entirely in XML and are independent of local machines. Virtual machine definitions can therefore easily be ported to other computers.

VirtualBox 7.0 Beta 1 changelog:

  • Audio Recording: Now uses Vorbis as the default audio format for WebM containers. Opus is no longer used.
  • Audio: Added a “default” host driver type to allow moving virtual machines (appliances) between different platforms without having to explicitly change the audio driver. When the “default” driver is selected, the best audio backend option for a platform will be used. This is the default for newly created virtual machines.
  • Guest Control: Implemented initial support for automatically updating guest additions for
  • Linux Guests
  • Guest Control: Implemented ability to wait and/or restart guest when updating guest additions via VBoxManage
  • VBoxManage: Added Guest Control “waitrunlevel” subcommand to allow waiting for a guest to reach a certain runlevel
  • Windows hosts: Added experimental support for running autostart VMs in session 0, to allow VMS to run even when a user is not logged in (disabled by default, please see manual)
