Volleyball splits day one of UNH / Merrimack tournament

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. (September 17, 2021) – The Morgan State volleyball team parted ways on the opening day of the UNH / Merrimack tournament Friday at Bert Hammel Court on the Merrimack College campus. The Lady Bears beat host Merrimack 3-0 (25-13, 25-23, 25-15) in Game 1, before falling to co-host New Hampshire 3-0 (25-22, 25 -18, 25-20).

Morgan State improved to 2-11 this season, while Merrimack fell to 0-13 and New Hampshire improved to 7-5 overall.

The Lady Bears will wrap up the tournament on Saturday, September 18, when they travel to Durham, New Hampshire to face Rhode Island at 11 a.m. at the Lundholm Gymnasium on the University of New Hampshire campus.

Match 1
Morgan State 3, Merrimack 0

Madison Grace totaled 10 kills and Garbriela Hiciano added nine. Jasmine perry finished with seven kills, while also hitting for a 0.667 game and career kill percentage. Mackenzie jefferson had a record 26 assists and Jadore Hayes had the eight best recoveries of the game. Alyssa sampson had four of seven aces serving Morgan State.

Morgan State recorded 41 kills and reached 0.301 as a team to win the first first sweep of the season. The Lady Bears recorded a best set of 15 kills twice in sets 2 and 3, while also hitting for a team-best 0.421 attack percentage. Host Warriors totaled 19 eliminations for the game and stood at 0.091 winning percentages.

Morgan State also held an advantage in recoveries (27-17), assists (35-18) and blocks (4-2).

The host Warriors were led by Sydney Green, who finished with five kills, while Megan Larson led five digs. Megan Rumenapp finished with 14 assists and Brooke Leestma had three aces on the serve.

Match 2
Morgan State 0, New Hampshire 3

Gabriela Hiciano totaled 10 kills and hit 0.421, while Jasmine perry (.353 hit) and Madison Grace each had seven wins in the loss to New Hampshire. Mackenzie jefferson finished with a peak of 23 assists and six digs at the top of the team. Perry set a record four blocks, all solo, to help Morgan State have a 7.0-5.0 blocking advantage over the Wildcats.

New Hampshire was led by Erin Hedrick, who finished with seven kills. Wren Macaulay missed a double-double with 20 assists and nine digs at the top of the team.

Set 1
The Wildcats broke a 15-15 tie with a 5-2 push to take a 20-17 lead. Morgan State tied the score at 20, following back-to-back attacking errors from UNH. The Wildcats increased their lead to three (23-20) and won 25-22. Morgan State totaled a record 13 assists and clocked a season record of 0.333 in the first set. UNH finished with 11 kills and reached .130 for the set.

Set 2
UNH used a 12-6 push to take a 17-11 lead, capped by an attacking error from Morgan State. Morgan State came close to five points (19-14) on a service ace from Jefferson, but wouldn’t come close. The Wildcats would score six of the last 10 points to secure the 25-18 victory. The Lady Bears totaled 12 kills but made six errors for a .194 hitting percentage. UNH finished the set with 11 kills and had an attacking percentage of .391.

Set 3
Morgan State trailed 20-12, before using an 8-4 run to move closer to 24-20 after a bad set was blamed on UNH. The Wildcats would seal the deal with a Shea Purcell win for the 25-21 win. New Hampshire would hold the Lady Bears to a .031 hit percentage after recording nine kills with eight errors. The Wildcats would end with eight kills for a .125 hitting percentage.
